Web Directory vs Search Engine
A Web directory attempts to organize Web sites into topics and subtopics. A directory depends on humans for its listings. You submit a description to the directory for your entire site, or editors write one for sites they review. If you're looking for information on the Web that fits neatly into a subject or category, try a directory first. If that is the case, a directory will help you find just a few links that are exactly what you need.
A search engine will look for occurances of your keywords all over the Web. It doesn't understand what your keywords mean or why they're important to you. To a search engine, a keyword is just a string of characters. It doesn't know the difference between Cancer the crab in the zodiac, and cancer the disease. Often times you get too many links on subjects that you don't want.
